Dr. Mike Hockey picAbout
Michael Maristuen DC, CCSP, is owner and director for Spine & Sports Chiropractic. He attended undergraduate school at St. Cloud State University and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Bio-Medical Science. He played hockey all four years at SCSU while obtaining his degree. He is a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic who graduated from Northwestern Health Sciences University in 2003. Dr. Maristuen continued his education by obtaining the post graduate designation of Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP*) by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP).  He is certified in many different soft tissue techniques used to treat acute and chronic conditions. As a certified acupuncturist he practices the highly effective  therapeutic Dry Needling technique. He is certified in Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) by the Graston Technique Institute (www.grastontechnique.com), certified in Fascial Manipulation (www.fascialmanipulation.com), Registered Trigenics Physician (RTP) by the Trigenics Institute (www.trigenics.com), trained in Accelerated Recovery Performance trainer (www.arpwave.com) a neuromuscular stimulation device, a trained Applied Kinesiologist, a certified Rocktape Doc for Rock Tape a kinesiology taping technique (www.rocktape.com) and has studied Neurokinetic Therapy (www.neurokinetictherapy.com) . Please don’t hesitate to visit any of the previous websites to learn more about these unique therapeutic techniques.

Philosophy
Dr. Maristuen uses a series of specific muscle tests called Applied Kinesiology (AK) when examining patients. This is not a strength test, rather, he is testing to see if neurologically the muscle is functioning correctly. Simply put, muscles are designed to absorb force. When you are walking, your leg muscles are absorbing force. When you are running, your leg muscles are absorbing much more force. If there are muscles neurologically not absorbing the force (called inhibition), then that force must transfer into regions that are not designed to absorb force. In our example of running, if your quadratus (anterior thigh) muscle is not absorbing force properly, then that increased force of running can transfer force to the patellar tendon, thus damaging the tendon and causing patellar tendonitis. Tendons, ligaments, discs, and cartilage are not designed to absorb force. If someone has knee pain, all the muscles that cross the knee joint must be evaluated. In this case, treating the patellar tendon may only yield temporary results. Why? Because the physician only treated the pain and did not address what was causing the pain. Furthermore, if someone has knee pain, because we consider ourselves second to none for getting results, we evaluate the joint above (the hip) and the joint below (the ankle). His goal remains the same for each and every patient… Find out what is causing the pain, fix it and release you to live your life without pain!

Advanced Therapies

Laser Therapy.  The Lumix 250 is a Class 4 Superpulsed Diode Laser that operates at the strongest level possible. Laser waves are able to penetrate bone, ligaments, nerves, tendons, cartilage, muscles and skin. Laser therapy has photobiomodulation beneficial effects for relieving pain, resolving inflammation, and increasing the speed, quality and tensile strength of tissue repair. It has also been shown to stimulate the immune system, reduce infection and improve the function of neurological tissue. It is also effective in increasing collagen production, bone repair, reducing edema, increasing lymphatic drainage, and increasing production of capillary beds.

Accelerated Recovery Performance (ARP) therapy is used by more professional elite athletes than any other medical device on the planet. Many of these athletes own an ARP and use it on a regular basis to prevent injuries and to recover quickly from surgery or injury. ARP therapy is utilized on every patient because it dramatically speeds up the recovery from injuries by electrically lengthening the musculature, decreasing inflammation and it also breaks up scar tissue. ARP is a diagnostic tool that is used to locate the origin of the problem. This is unique, because where you feel the pain may not be where the injury is located.

Graston Technique is an instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization used to break up scar tissue and trigger points. Scar tissue can be pain producing and it can affect neurologically how the muscle contracts, thus inhibiting the muscle from absorbing force properly. Many elite athletes have benefited from Graston Technique and it is a main treatment option for acute and chronic cases treated in this office.

Dry Needling  is different than acupuncture. It is an internal therapy designed to break up scar tissue and trigger points, whereas, Graston technique is an external treatment used to break up scar tissue. Based on the clinical results, this is one of Dr. Maristuen’s treatment options for extremely complex chronic cases.

Fascial Manipulation is a systematic approach to manual therapy. It focuses on the fascia, including the epimysium and the retinacula and considers that the myofascial system is a three-dimensional continuum.

The majority of chiropractic physicians and physical therapists do not have any of the certifications listed above. For example, there are about 2500 chiropractors and physical therapists in the Twin Cities area. There are only about 60 practitioners that offer Graston Technique in this area. Dr. Maristuen is 1 of about 8 clinics in the state of Minnesota that offer ARP therapy. Dr. Maristuen is 1 of 2 clinics in the Twin Cities that does dry needling. He is the only physician in the state that is certified in Fascial Manipulation. Why are these certifications important to mention? Every patient’s pain is different. What’s causing your knee pain can be totally different than someone experiencing the same type and location of pain. Different soft tissue techniques have different physiological effects. Graston technique treatment physiologically produces a different effect on the soft tissues than fascial manipulation. Dr. Maristuen can customize your treatment based on what would yield the fastest and safest way to get you the results that you deserve.

Dr. Maristuen treats all spinal complaints (neck/ mid-back/ low back), but what makes his practice unique is his specialization in treating extremity (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle) pain, sports injuries and car accident injuries. Also, he works with many orthopedic doctors providing post-operative rehabilitation.
